Artist's Description

One of the most iconic view of New York! In 1984 when I was kid I saw the poster of the famous Martin Scorsese Once Upon The Time in New York and loved that view. I like how the building reveals a part of the Manhattan Bridge, it gave me a sense of how huge and incredible New York is.

About 15 years ago I started becoming a professional photographer, and in 2013 the very prestigious Berlin Publisher Teneues asked me to do a black and white book on New York. One of the first photos that I wanted to take was this very specific spot. But every time I came there it was crowded with people. I kept coming back over and over and there was no go.

But after two weeks of patience it started pouring rain so hard that the streets were getting more and more empty. I took a cab all the way to Brooklyn and Miracle no one was there.

I set up my tripod with a very high end camera and tried a lot of different framing and between cars coming.

Ever since I was a kid I wanted to create pictures that people could enjoy. I remember in the 80's when I started seeing the first computer generated images I was amazed by the colors and the drama. I became a huge fan of the epic and dramatic look that you experience in Cinema. Movies like Gladiator, Gone with the Wind, The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan or Sherlock Holmes have such distinct drama with amazing sunsets, clouds and color themes. I know most of it is not real, but I still love it. Some of my photos are heavily retouched, some are not.
